Directly across from Union Square Park, the Union Square Café has been a New York institution for decades. Equally famous for its beautiful waitstaff and its food, this café has been the location of the discovery of many famous actresses and models. Opened in 1985 by famed restaurateur Danny Meyer, the place has weathered over a quarter century in operation without many major changes. Popular picks from the menu include the mushroom sformato, a savory custard that is as delicious as it is unusual, as well as the Thursday night ribeye special, a tremendous slab of meat that’s recommended for two people. Pasta lovers rave about the tender, toothsome gnocchi as well. For dessert, get the signature banana tart if you have room, as it’s unfailingly excellent. On a cold day, warm up with a mug of the café’s robust hot chocolate. Great service is a Danny Meyer trademark, and one this place delivers on in spades.
